How to compress an image
Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP, adjust the quality slider and pick a format. The compressed size updates live; download when you are happy.
Why compress images?
- Forms and portals: many government and job portals in India reject photos above 50-200 KB. A quality of 60-75% usually gets a phone photo under the limit.
- Faster sharing: smaller files upload quicker on slow connections and use less data.
- Faster websites: compressed images make pages load faster and rank better.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression runs entirely in your browser using the canvas built into your device. Your images never leave it.
Which format should I pick?
JPG is the safest and smallest for photos. WebP is typically 25-35% smaller again and works in all modern browsers and apps. PNG is lossless - it keeps every pixel but compresses photos poorly; use it for screenshots and graphics with transparency.
What quality setting should I use?
70% is a good default for photos shared online or on WhatsApp. For printing, stay at 85% or higher. Below 40% the artefacts become visible.
What happens to transparent PNGs saved as JPG?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with white. Choose WebP or PNG to keep transparency.
