FD vs RD - which suits you?

Method and sources

FD maturity uses compound interest A = P(1 + r/n)nt with quarterly compounding as the default, matching the quarterly convention Indian banks publish for term deposits (State Bank of India: interest on a term deposit is payable quarterly - sbi.co.in). RD applies the same quarterly-compounded rate month by month; HDFC Bank documents quarterly compounding and the standard RD formula variables on its RD calculator page. Banks may round differently, so treat results as close estimates.

Good to know

Senior citizens usually get 0.25-0.75% higher rates. Rates vary by bank and tenure, so check your bank's current rate card before investing. This tool is an estimator, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How is FD interest calculated in India?
Most Indian banks compound fixed deposits quarterly: the yearly rate divided by 4 is applied every quarter, and that interest itself earns interest in later quarters. This calculator uses that standard formula, with monthly, half-yearly and yearly options for banks that differ.
How is RD interest calculated?
Each monthly deposit earns interest for the time it stays in the account. Banks compound RD interest quarterly; this calculator applies the equivalent rate month by month, so totals may differ from your bank's figure by a few rupees.
Is FD interest taxable?
Yes. Interest from FDs and RDs is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate. Banks deduct TDS when interest crosses the applicable threshold in a financial year.
Is any data stored?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser; nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
